Tesla Launches First Showroom in Mumbai, Introduces Model Y to India tesla model y 205807742

Tesla has officially entered the Indian market by opening its first “experience centre” showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15, 2025. The company expects to begin sales immediately, with the Model Y electric SUV, imported from Shanghai, marking its debut in the country.

The base Model Y is priced at around ₹60 lakh, with the long-range version costing approximately ₹68 lakh (ex-showroom), reflecting India’s ~70% import duty on fully-built EVs. This makes Tesla’s entry highly premium, targeting affluent buyers and challenging luxury EV competitors.

Tesla’s launch in India follows a retail-first strategy, postponing any local manufacturing for now. A second showroom in Delhi-NCR is expected soon.

Despite missing out on import duty incentives, Tesla is inserting itself into India’s nascent EV ecosystem where EVs currently make up just 4–5% of new car sales, while the government aims for a 30% EV share by 2030 . Tesla’s entry coincides with global rivals like German luxury brands and VinFast launching operations and pre-bookings in the same period Reuters.

The success of this move will depend on infrastructure development, consumer response to premium pricing, and Tesla’s future plans for local manufacturing and charging networks.
