Renault’s electric turbo hatchback electrifies India despite ₹17.6L price Renaullt

Renault’s new electric turbo hatchback is turning heads in India. Even with a premium ₹17.6 lakh price tag, buyers are signing up fast. Economic Times notes the limited-edition R5 Turbo 3E – Renault’s modern remake of the classic 1980s R5 Turbo – attracted about 850 orders in its first week. Clearly, this quirky hot hatch (essentially a “mini-supercar”) is hitting the sweet spot between retro style and raw EV power.

Rally-inspired design and performance

The result is a street-legal rally car for the road. Its boxy body, massive rear wing and flared fenders look straight out of a drift event. Under the eye-catching shell, however, it’s all business: Renault claims roughly 540 horsepower and a 0–100 km/h time in just under 3.5 seconds. Two rear-mounted in-wheel motors (a first for a production EV) help launch this hatch with lightning-fast acceleration. In short, it’s rally-bred design meeting supercar performance.

Standout specs and features

High power: ~540–555 hp and 0–100 km/h in ~3.5 seconds.

Rally-car looks: Wide track, deep wheel arches, and a giant aero wing (an unmistakable R5 Turbo theme).

Advanced tech: Dual rear in-wheel electric motors for insane torque, bespoke carbon-fiber tube-frame chassis (~980 kg excluding batteries) for light, sporty handling.

Fast charging: 800-volt battery pack (350 kW DC) that goes from 15% to 80% charge in about 15 minutes.

Exclusive build: Only 1,980 units will be made (all individually numbered), with highly customizable paint and interior options.

These features make the Renault hatch a real head-turner. Retro racing touches meet cutting-edge EV tech in one package – buyers say it feels like a tiny electric supercar.

India’s electric car appetite is surging

All this comes at a time of booming EV interest in India. Recent data shows April 2025 EV sales jumped about 44.6% year-on-year, as consumers ask “Why not an EV?” instead of “Why an EV?” In this climate, even a pricey EV can find eager buyers. Renault’s turbo hatch proves that buyers are willing to pay more if an electric car (EV) offers fun, exclusivity and performance. The R5 Turbo 3E’s early success suggests India’s EV adopters are ready for something bold – not just commuter cars, but exciting new models that pack a punch.
