Maharashtra’s Electric Push: One-Third of New Vehicles to be Electric by 2030 maharashtra EV Policy

Maharashtra’s new EV policy, effective April 2025–2030, aims to make roughly one-third of all new vehicles in the state electric by 2030 (Official sources describe this as about 30% EV penetration). This follows the 2021 Maharashtra EV policy, which targeted 10% EV sales by 2025. The government resolution says the state will use incentives, new charging infrastructure, and manufacturing support to hit this goal.

This ambitious target lines up with India’s broader “EV30@30” drive (about 30% EVs by 2030). Maharashtra notes that reaching this EV share could cut roughly 325 tonnes of PM2.5 pollution and 1,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions by 2030, helping improve urban air quality and meet climate goals.

The policy allocates subsidies for 100,000 electric two-wheelers, 25,000 transport-sector electric cars, and 1,500 electric buses.

EVs get full exemption from Maharashtra’s motor vehicle tax and registration renewal fees during the policy period, and 100% toll waivers on the Mumbai–Pune and Mumbai–Nashik expressways. The state will also consider extending tax breaks on other roads.

The policy mandates fast chargers at ~25 km intervals along highways, and at least one EV charger at every government office parking lot. Public charging projects can get gap funding, and building codes will require new residential and commercial buildings to be EV-ready with dedicated charging spots.

All new city vehicles (in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, etc.) must be electric, and 50% of utility vehicle purchases by city agencies will be EVs. The state also plans to support local EV manufacturing and R&D. Overall, these measures aim to make Maharashtra a leading EV manufacturing and charging hub. The EV industry can create many jobs in factories, services and infrastructure. For example, Ather Energy is building a new electric scooter plant in Maharashtra. More broadly, analysts project that millions of EV-related jobs could arise nationwide as the industry expands. One study estimates roughly 5 million direct and 30 million indirect EV-sector jobs in India by 2030. Boosting local EV manufacturing (assembly, batteries, parts) will also strengthen the state’s economy.
