Kolkata’s Green Mobility Drive: India’s Largest Solar-Powered EV Hub to Launch in Thakurpukur

Kolkata is set to host India’s largest single-site electric vehicle (EV) charging hub, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban transportation. Developed by EzUrja in collaboration with Snap-E, the ₹7.5 crore facility in Thakurpukur will feature 300 chargers, making it the second-largest globally after China’s 650-charger station.

Situated on a nearly two-acre plot previously owned by PSU Andrew Yule & Co., the hub will cater primarily to Snap-E’s fleet of 300 electric cabs. It will offer a mix of fast and slow chargers, with capacities up to 120 kWh, and a total load capacity of 6 MW. Notably, the facility aims to generate about 40% of its energy through an on-site solar-powered microgrid, enhancing its eco-friendly credentials.

This initiative complements other green mobility efforts in Kolkata. The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO), in partnership with Powerbank, has established Eastern India’s largest public fast-charging hub in New Town, capable of charging 25 vehicles simultaneously, with plans to expand capacity further.

Additionally, Tata Power has been instrumental in expanding the city’s EV infrastructure. Collaborations with Tollygunge Club and Kolkata Airport have led to the installation of multiple charging stations, reinforcing the city’s commitment to green mobility.

These developments align with Kolkata’s broader vision of becoming a “Smart Green City,” leveraging renewable energy and advanced infrastructure to promote sustainable transportation solutions.
