IKEA India Leads the Way with Electric Heavy-Duty Trucks for Sustainable Logistics IKEA

IKEA India, in collaboration with BLR Logistiks, has taken a significant step towards sustainable logistics by deploying the country’s first electric heavy-duty truck on public roads. This initiative aligns with IKEA’s global commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.

Pioneering Electric Freight in India

Launched in October 2024, the electric truck has successfully completed over 100 trips, transporting goods between Mumbai’s port, the Pune distribution center, and the IKEA store in Mumbai. This 120-kilometer route, previously serviced by two diesel trucks, is now efficiently managed by a single electric vehicle, showcasing the potential of electric mobility in commercial logistics.

Environmental and Operational Benefits

The deployment of the electric truck has led to substantial environmental and operational improvements:

Emission Reduction: A 30% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions on the route, equating to approximately 206 tons of CO₂ annually.

Cost Efficiency: Despite higher initial investment, IKEA reports a 16% annual reduction in transport costs due to improved efficiency and reduced fuel expenses.

Operational Improvements: Delivery turnaround time has been halved from two days to one, and empty runs have been reduced by about 160,000 kilometers per year.

Strategic Infrastructure Enhancements

To support this transition, IKEA and BLR Logistiks have implemented several infrastructure and process enhancements:

Customs Process Optimization: Streamlining customs procedures for faster container handling.

Charging Infrastructure: Investment in necessary charging facilities to support the electric truck’s operations.

Route Optimization: Collaborative efforts to optimize routes and reduce idle times during loading and unloading.

A Model for Sustainable Logistics

This initiative serves as a model for sustainable logistics in India, demonstrating that electric heavy-duty vehicles can be both environmentally beneficial and economically viable. IKEA’s success story may inspire other companies to adopt similar strategies, contributing to a greener and more efficient logistics sector.
