Cygni Energy Launches India’s First LEED-Certified 4.8 GWh BESS Gigafactory in Hyderabad, Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy Innovation Cygni

India’s push for electric mobility and grid resilience has driven demand for large-scale battery storage. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) help balance renewable power and support EV charging infrastructure. Cygni Energy’s new gigafactory marks a key milestone in this transition.

State-of-the-Art Facility

The gigafactory sits within the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster at Maheshwaram, Telangana. It covers 1.6 lakh sq ft on a five-acre site. Phase I was built with over ₹100 crore in capital expenditure. The site includes an Advanced Engineering Lab and a dedicated Battery Management System (BMS) Lab for testing and quality assurance.

Cutting-Edge Technologies

The assembly line is fully automated, featuring Poka-Yoke-enabled stations to prevent defects. Cygni is exploring Cell-to-Pack (CTP) and Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) designs to boost volumetric energy density and simplify pack assembly. Ongoing R&D includes sodium-ion chemistry to lower costs and improve temperature resilience. Advanced Energy Management System algorithms will enable real-time grid-code compliance.

Expansion Roadmap

Phase II will more than double capacity from 4.8 GWh to 10.8 GWh by 2027. This next stage requires an additional ₹150 crore, bringing the total investment to ₹250 crore across both phases. The existing footprint will be optimized rather than expanding the land area.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The gigafactory is expected to generate over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in manufacturing, R&D, and supply-chain roles. Local procurement of components will spur MSME growth in Telangana. Government and industry leaders see it as a catalyst for regional development.

Significance for India’s Clean-Energy Ecosystem

By building domestic BESS capacity, India reduces dependence on imports of battery cells and modules. LEED-certified green construction minimizes the factory’s carbon footprint. Automated, scalable production supports the government’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Cygni’s gigafactory is a model for future “Make in India” initiatives in clean-tech manufacturing.
