Southern Railway Rolls Out EV Chargers at 28 Key Chennai Stations Southern Railways

Southern Railway will set up electric vehicle charging points at 28 stations in its Chennai division by December 2025. The project will use a public‑private partnership model for installation and operation. Commuters will pay for charging via QR codes or UPI on site.

Stations Covered

The charging facilities will go live at the following 28 stations in and around Chennai: Ambattur, Avadi, Arakkonam, Basin Bridge Junction, Chengalpattu, Chennai Beach, Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Guindy, Katpadi, Kotturpuram, Light House, Pallavaram, Perambur, St. Thomas Mount, Tambaram, Taramani, Tiruvanmiyur, Thirumayilai, Tiruttani, Tiruvallur, Trisulam, Urappakkam, Velachery, Villivakkam and Vyasarpadi Jeeva.

Charging Point Details

Each station will host at least two AC slow chargers and one DC fast charger. Charging ports will support all standard connectors used by two‑wheelers and four‑wheelers. The shelters will include clear signage and user instructions

Expected Impact

The network will serve daily commuters and last‑mile travellers. It will encourage rail passengers to use EVs for the first or last leg of their journeys. The scheme also aligns with Indian Railways’ goal of net‑zero carbon emissions by 2030.
